A heart-to-heart chat with @MarieSexton and more on the #SaugatuckSummer blog tour @RiptideBooks #mmromance

Due to the long holiday weekend and my son’s 7th birthday (which is actually today) I wasn’t able to update about the Saugatuck Summer blog tour for a few days, but I wanted to be sure to point out the post that went up over the weekend at The Novel Approach. There, I sit down with the lovely Marie Sexton and have a very open talk about our personal experiences as the adult children of alcoholics and how that informed our handling of our respective characters, Topher and Trey (from Family Man.) I knew the moment I read Family Man (which was a couple months after I finished writing Saugatuck Summer) that one of the authors had personal experience with living with an addict and subsequently found out that it was Marie, and in the process of our conversation we realized there are some universal-and very ugly-truths that most people don’t talk about so when we see them revealed, it has quite an impact for those of us who have lived through it as well.

There were also several other spotlight stops-some complete with reviews!-over the weekend, so be sure to check those out as well.

MM Good Book Reviews
Words of Wisdom from the Scarf Princess
Book Reviews and More by Kathy
LeAnn’s Book Reviews
TTC Books and More
All I Want and More Books
Tracy’s Place

Each stop has a new Saugatuck Summer trivia question, and answering the questions gets you another chance to win your choice of any one of my backlist titles. Yes, this means some familiarity with Saugatuck Summer is required. Some of the answers can only be found in the book. Others can be found in the excerpts that have been posted along the blog tour, or in the quotes from Saugatuck Summer on Goodreads. PLEASE DO NOT ANSWER THE TRIVIA QUESTIONS IN THE COMMENTS OF THE POST. Instead, click the link to my “About” page and use the contact form there to submit the answers to my privately. Each correct answer = one entry into the drawing, so the more questions you answer, the more chances you’ll have to win. The contest will remain open until June 19, with the winners being chosen on June 20. So good luck

Also, stay tuned this week for some really exciting news regarding Third Wave, my upcoming murder mystery!

Get a sneak peek at Risk Aware (Saugatuck #2) and more! @RiptideBooks #SaugatuckSummer #blogtour

Today on Day 4 of the Saugatuck Summer blog tour, I’ve got a special treat lined up in the form of an excerpt from Risk Aware (Saugatuck #2.) Those of you who have read Saugatuck Summer are already acquainted with Geoff and Robin, an couple who take Topher in when he’s got no where else to go. Risk Aware is the story of how Geoff and Robin get together. I’m sharing it over at Delighted Reader.

I also have another excerpt from Saugatuck Summer, this one a talk between Topher and Jace when they reconnect soon after Topher has ended his affair with his BFF’s dad. That is happening over the The Book Nympho.

I’m also making a spotlight stop over at Butterfly-o-Meter with yet another chance to win your choice of my backlist titles. How does that work? Well, at each stop along the blog tour, I’ll be trivia question from Saugatuck Summer. Yes, this means some familiarity with the book is required, though it doesn’t necessarily mean a purchase is required. Aside from things like the Amazon and B&N lending programs, you might also find the answers in the excerpts I’ve shared along the blog tour, or in the Saugatuck Summer quotes on Goodreads. The more questions you answer, the more chances you have to win.

Please do not post the trivia answers in the comments on the blog posts. Instead, go to my “About” page, where I’ve customized the contact form there for you to submit the answers to me privately. The contest will remain open until June 19 with the winners chosen on June 20, to give people a chance to find the answers. Each correct answer is another chance to win! So come play with us!

A new excerpt and more chances to win! @RiptideBooks @TheBrandonShire #SaugatuckSummer

Today on the Saugatuck Summer blog tour, I’m over at Brandon Shire’s blog sharing an excerpt featuring Topher and Jace as Topher tries to navigate how to handle your new love interest flirting with you right in front of the guy you just ended an affair with.

I’m also swinging by Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words and Creative Deeds with spotlight stops. Each stop provides another trivia question to answer, which means another chance to win your choice of any one of my backlist titles.

Here’s the deal: At each stop, I’m asking a trivia question from Saugatuck Summer. Some answers can only be found in the book. Some can be found in the excerpts or posts that you’ll read along this blog tour. Others can be found in the quotes from Saugatuck Summer over at Goodreads. PLEASE do not post the answer in the comments. Instead, contact me using the form on my About page and send me the answer privately. Each correct answer will be entered into the drawing, which will remain open until June 19 to give folks a chance to find as many answers as they can, and then three winners will be chosen on June 20.

Please, come on and play along! I’m getting a bit lonely over here! Don’t be sure to miss my previous Saugatuck Summer blog tour stops as well, for more chances to win!

Saugatuck Summer blog tour Day 2, new reviews, and more! @RiptideBooks #mmromance #newadult

It’s Day 2 of the Saugatuck Summer blog tour! Yesterday I stopped by Sinfully Sexy Book Reviews to talk with Casey Statton about the Saugatuck Summer soundtrack and made spotlight stops at Rainbow Gold Book Reviews and Romance Junkies.

Today, I’m over at Prism Book Alliance with my go-to artist, Kerry Chin, who despite the universe and technology conspiring against us, has been brilliant as usual in giving vision to what are, in my opinion, two very evocative descriptions of the art my character Jace does of the protagonist, Topher. Those passages were just begging for someone to bring them to life. I’m also making Spotlight stops at The Blogger Girls and Long and Short Reviews.

Each stop will provide yet another opportunity to win your choice of my backlist titles, with a little bit of a fun twist. This time around, I’m having a Saugatuck Summer trivia contest. This does not mean a purchase is required. All the answers can be found in the book, yes, and some of the questions can probably only be answered via familiarity with the book itself. Others, however, can be answered by checking out excerpts from other posts on the blog tour, here on my website, or reading the quotes from Saugatuck Summer on Goodreads.

PLEASE DO NOT ANSWER THE TRIVIA QUESTIONS IN THE COMMENTS. Instead, there will be a link to my About page, where I’ve customized the contact form so that you can submit your answers to me privately. Each correct answer will get you another entry into the drawing, and three winners will be selected. The contest will be open until June 19 with winners being selected on June 20. So be sure to check out every stop on the tour and answer as many questions as you can!

There have also been some lovely reviews coming in for Saugatuck Summer this past week. Check them out!

“one hell of an intense, gorgeous and wonderful book” — Sara, Boys in our Books

one really addictive summer read” — Jillyn, Bitches & Prose

one brilliantly written book” — Tina, Sinfully Sexy Book Reviews

“an emotional and engaging read” — Optimist King’s Wench, Prism Book Alliance

This hurricane of emotion is a category five recommendation.” — Tina, The Novel Approach

“I can think of quite a few of these guys that have stayed with me long after I finished their book. Topher will be one of those guys!” — Vanessa, The Jeep Diva

Tune in tomorrow for more of the Saugatuck Summer blog tour!

Saugatuck Summer is available @RiptideBooks at midnight! @caseystratton #newadult #mmromance #comingofage

Well, it’s finally here! Tonight at midnight, Saugatuck Summer will go live for those who had pre-ordered from Riptide. There’s still a few hours left if you want to get your hands on it early, as well as be entered to win a year of free books from Riptide!

SaugatuckSummer_400x600One summer can change everything.

Hi, I’m Topher Carlisle: twenty-one, pretty, and fabulous. At least, that’s what I keep telling myself. But let’s get real. Walking the fake-it-til-you-make-it road to independence and self-respect isn’t easy. Especially since my mom’s a deadbeat alcoholic, and most of my family expects me to turn out just as worthless. Oh, and I’m close to losing my college swimming scholarship, so let’s add “dropout” to the list.

My BFF has invited me to stay at her beach house on the shore of Lake Michigan. That’ll give me one summer to make money and figure out what I want to do with my life. So of course I decide to have an affair with my BFF’s married, closeted dad. Because that always works out.

Now I’m homeless, friendless, jobless. Worthless. Just like my family expects, right? Except there’s this great guy, Jace, who sees it differently. He’s got it all together in ways I can only dream of—he’s hot, creative, insightful, understanding. He seems to think I don’t give myself enough credit. And if I don’t watch out, I may start to believe him.

Starting Monday, I’ll be on tour, hitting a bunch of your favorite book blogs and offering chances to win your pick of any book from my backlist (all-in-one volumes not included.) Be sure to check out the tour schedule and brush up on your Saugatuck Summer trivia to enter to win!

SaugatuckSummer_CDcoverI am also really excited to unveil the Saugatuck Summer soundtrack from a brilliant singer/songwriter of my personal acquaintance, Casey Stratton. Casey not only generously gave me permission to reference his catalog of music for Saugatuck Summer, but he compiled the tracks into an official soundtrack for the book!

You can find it on his store here (if the link doesn’t work, check back in a day or two, it’s not quite live yet.) Or if you want a preview, check out the playlist on Spotify! Casey is an independent artist, so please, if you enjoy the music, purchase the album and support his music!

Coming this week: The Strain Blog Tour

Strain_TourBanner(2)

Do you like DVD extras? Yeah? So do I. It’s entirely possible I’ve watched the appendices on the Lord of the Rings extended editions more times than I have the movies themselves.

So for the Strain blog tour, I’m going to try to make my posts a bit like the “behind-the-scenes/making-of” documentaries you might find on a good DVD. A lot of things the world-building and events that Strain depends on happen long before the events of the book itself, and while an in-depth recap of them during the course of Strain got in the way of the flow of the story, I find some of the back-story fascinating and hope you will as well.

Monday, February 17: The Jeep Diva

In Part One: Project Juggernaut, I’ll be discussing the Bane plague: how it began, what its effects were, and what the survivors did afterward.

Cup o’ Porn will also graciously be hosting me for a spotlight stop!

Tuesday, February 18: Pants-Off Reviews and 3 Chicks After Dark

In Part Two: The Juggernaut Battalion, I’ll discuss the workings of Delta Company and their comrades within Project Juggernaut, particularly as it relates to events involving Bravo and Charlie Companies. (Pants-Off Reviews)

Part Three, “Does a Sex Scene Have to be Sexy?” will be a documentary on the use of sexual content for non-erotic purposes. (3 Chicks After Dark)

Words of Wisdom from the Scarf Princess will also be hosting a Spotlight tour stop that day!

Wednesday, February 19: Queer Town Abbey

In Part Four: The Women of Strain, I’ll be doing a featurette on “The Women of Strain.” One of the most important and driving characters in Strain is Xolani, Darius’s second-in-command, and life within Delta Company has some interesting implications for its female-bodied troops.

Melanie M. at Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words (I just adore her, she’s so nice) will be hosting me for a spotlight stop that day, too.

Thursday, February 20: Sinfully Sexy Book Reviews and The Book Nympho

Part Five: Deleted Scene from Strain will include a scene from near the end of Strain that didn’t make the cut. (sex scene, including BDSM content, be warned) (Sinfully Sexy Book Reviews)

Part Six: Giving Life will be another documentary discussing the issue of fluid exchange and STDs and how I subvert those tropes within the book. (The Book Nympho)

Friday, February 21: Book Reviews & More by Kathy

Finally, Part Seven: Bane, Chapter One will include an excerpt from the rough draft of Bane, which is one of my works-in-progress. Though technically it could be called a prequel, it’s not necessary to understand Strain. I wanted to go back and tell the story of the beginning of the Bane plague. Where Strain is a post-apocalyptic story, Bane will be “peri-apocalyptic.”

I will also be doing a spotlight stop at Dawn’s Reading Nook.

Be sure to check the blog tour page at Riptide to see when each of these posts is scheduled.

Commenters at each stop along the way will be entered into a drawing for the chance to win one of three ebook copies of Impulse: The Complete Trilogy, the all-in-one edition of my novel-in-three parts. Please include your contact information, either email, Twitter, or Facebook. The Contest will be open until February 28th, with the winner being announced March 1—just in time for the Every Inch of the Way/To the Very Last Inch (The Professor’s Rule #4 and #5).

YAY! Congratulations! *scurries off to buy*

Leta Blake

Love’s Nest is here! Whoot, whoot! Let’s all dance!!

This third book in the Tempting Tales series is currently available at Ellora’s Cave and coming soon to Barnes & Noble, Amazon, Sony, All Romance eBooks and more. Also, be sure to check it out and add to your Wanna Read list at Goodreads!

***

Love’s Nest is based on the fairy tale The Twelve Dancing Princesses. You can read more about the inspiration for the story here in my The Next Big Thing Blog Hop post.

Also, I’d like to say that somehow we managed to get this thing published without any front material. We shall look into fixing that. In the meantime, we’d like to enthusiastically and publicly thank Alejandra for her awesome help in making sure the Spanish words in the book were used accurately and with all the right accent marks! And for giving…

Announcing Impulse: The Complete Trilogy

Impulse-Trilogy-ecover-600x900

Some of you may have noticed that the individual volumes of the Impulse trilogy have been discounted, or are in the process of being discounted (a couple sites haven’t updated yet.)

This is to bring the price of the individual volumes a little lower to make them more in-line with my new digital “box set”-the complete trilogy in a single volume. For those of you who have been holding off to buy all the entire trilogy in one fell swoop, this is a really great deal. This digital box set will be $9.99, a $3.00 value versus buying the volumes individually.

I’m in the process of uploading the new files to the various sites. Look for this to go on sale around Thursday, June 27, 2013.

NEW RELEASE: “The Field of Someone Else’s Dreams” and new series announcement

This year I participated in GoodReads M/M Romance Group’s Love Has No Boundaries event, which means you get a free story! It’s titled The Field of Someone Else’s Dreams and it’s sort of a lead-in to my Seasons in Saugatuck series, which should debut next year.

I already have two Saugatuck novels written. One, titled Saugatuck Summer, features Topher Carlisle, whom you’ll find mentioned in The Field of Someone Else’s Dreams, and the other, titled Risk Aware, is the back-story of a pair of characters you meet in Saugatuck Summer. They’re stand-alone novels, which means you can read them in any order. So, for instance, even though you meet Robin and Geoff in Saugatuck Summer, several years after their story in Risk Aware takes place, you don’t really need to have read Risk Aware for Saugatuck Summer to make sense.

What is the Saugatuck series? Glad you asked! For those of you unfamiliar with west Michigan, Saugatuck and Douglas are neighboring towns on the shores of Lake Michigan, not far from Holland, Michigan. Even though this region of Michigan is very conservative, Saugatuck/Douglas started out as an art colony and eventually became a very popular gay and lesbian vacation destination. Douglas features a gay resort called The Dunes, and the area is sometimes preferred to as the Provincetown (or Fire Island) of the Midwest.

So, what better setting for a series of m/m romances? As the Saugatuck series develops, I hope to bring in other authors to participate and make it more of a collaborative endeavor.

I can’t make any official announcements just yet regarding the publication dates for Saugatuck Summer and Risk Aware, but enjoy the freebie for now and if your curiosity is piqued, stay tuned for more coming next year!

The rolling out of Velocity begins today

So, for those of you who don’t know exactly how self-publishing works, here’s some insight.

Those nicely coordinated releases where a book hits everywhere at once? It doesn’t happen for me.

The problem is, is that except for a few places (namely Kobo, ARe and RainbowEbooks) unless you’re a major publishing house, you cannot upload an ebook to be released at a future date, the creating a pre-order page or even just obtaining a URL to which you can direct buyers to in advance. At Amazon, Barnes & Noble, SmashWords, and I believe Itunes, the moment it is uploaded and approved, it goes live.

This makes it very hard to conduct a coordinated release. If you upload to ARe and RainbowBooks and SmashWords, it goes live immediately. But Amazon might take 12-24 hours (48 internationally) to approve your upload and create your product page. B&N and Kobo can take up to 72, and Itunes can take a couple weeks.

Believe me, this makes it tough to coordinate release-day reviews, because what I need to do is get the ARC to reviewers weeks in advance, but they won’t have purchase links to put on their post. So then I upload the files as close to release day as possible in order to have them approved and have a URL for the book at Amazon or wherever, and then email the purchase links to reviewers sometimes less than 24 hours before their review is due to go live. It’s really quite annoying and life would be infinitely easier if every site would let you upload in advance and schedule a future date for the files to go live.

The point to all this rambling is to inform you that today I will begin uploading to Amazon and B&N. The files have already been uploaded and approved at Kobo, but of course, there I can schedule an offset release date. The files have also been uploaded to Itunes as of several days ago, but last I checked they hadn’t yet been approved for distribution and might not be for some time yet.

What this means is that Velocity might go live on Amazon and B&N sometime today or tomorrow, before the “official” release date. So if you’re an early bird, you might just be able to snag a copy.

If you’re holding off for ARe or Rainbow Ebooks, I’m sorry but those will not be going live until Saturday. The reason for this is that my sales took a significant hit with the release of Acceleration going the pre-order route at ARe. It turns out, unless you’re a hugely popular, well-known author, people aren’t that interested in pre-ordering an upcoming release. The times at ARe that I’ve made the most sales have been when my book was both live and near the top of the New Releases list. If I were to upload it for pre-order, it would have fallen to the bottom of the New Releases list before it ever actually went live. So, I’m holding off on those sites and will upload and release there on Saturday, the official release date.

Happy hunting!
